Regreening in Tominian - 2009

This is the second instalment of photographs, all taken in the Tominian district, illustrating tree production and planting on the one hand and farmer management of natural regeneration (FMNR) on the other. Taken during and just after the rainy season.

Of particular note are the farmers, who for the first time have decided to protect the trees which have germinated in their fields with the crops (Fidèle Koné and his son Salomon, Richard Diarra, Karaba Sanou and Damarice Sanou). Note how shea nuts which have germinated naturally in the fields are already well ahead of those being raised in pots by Cyprien Koné.

Other points of note:

Fidèle decided to use euphorbia branches to protect young shea seedlings during the dry season. We have not seen this before.
Richard Diarra decided not to cut his millet at ground level but to leave about 30-40 cm of stalk. People sometimes do this in fields right next to the village so that any foraging hens and their chicks are hidden from birds of prey. Richard says he has done it in this field to help protect the young trees he's selected to keep.
